The Under Reported Story: ADHD, Stimulants, and the FDA, by Grace E. Jackson, MD, February 18, 2006
"The FDA and others are disingenuous when they ignore the contentious nature of identifying ADHD as a neurological disorder
for which medications are the best solution. A strong body of evidence now challenges both assertions. Clinicians question
the ethic of drugging children and adults, in an effort to suppress symptoms which may be interpreted as transient,
developmental delays (most children outgrow ADHD in their teens); normal variants of temperament;
contextually appropriate reactions; and/or the failure of caregivers, social systems, or culture to assist others
in maximizing their capacities for moral agency and self-control.
It is time for consumers, physicians, educators, and policy makers to confront the distorted and missing information
which surrounds the phenomenon of ADHD. More members of the medical community should doubt the legitimacy of the condition,
since no biological marker or diagnostic test has been found or devised."

Some time ago, we found a very uplifting article in the Montreal Gazette and wanted to share it with you. An excerpt follows.
Key to happiness - Psychiatrist with bad childhood says playfulness in youth can lead to a happy adulthood
Nancy J. White, Canadian Press, The Gazette, Montreal, Saturday, December 21, 2002
"...When the boy was 4, psychiatrists told his mother that the father was a hopeless case, and she divorced him. She married a man Hallowell describes as a sadistic alcoholic. She, too, became alcoholic.
At age 10, Hallowell was packed off to boarding school, where he struggled with two learning disabilities, dyslexia and attention deficit disorder.
With such an inauspicious start, conventional wisdom might easily have written him off as a likely boozer or drug addict.
But Hallowell, 52, is a psychiatrist who treats children and adults, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, a proud father of three and an author, whose latest book is
The Childhood Roots Of Adult Happiness.
... Hallowell's research is part of a growing movement in psychology that studies what has gone right in people's lives, not wrong... "Despite my father's mental illness and my mother's troubles, I knew in my heart that they unconditionally loved me," he says. "It's not a verbal thing. A kid just knows it. Unconditional love is the greatest gift a parent can give a child."
Then there were the connections he felt outside the home, the relatives, teachers, friends' parents and coaches who encouraged him, often acting as substitute parents... If there is a better way to strengthen a brain or to feed the spirit than to play, I don't know what it is," he writes.
...Hallowell also encourages parents not to give up on kids. "A lot of incredibly dynamic, successful adults screwed up big time in youth."

Have you heard about Dr. Mel Levine and his book A Mind At A Time? We saw it on Oprah and wanted to share it with you, in case you missed it. What follows are some excerpts ...

[excerpt - A Mind At A Time - By Mel Levine, M.D. - Simon & Schuster, Copyright © 2002 by Mel Levine]
... "Different minds learn differently," writes Dr. Mel Levine, one of the best-known education experts and pediatricians in America today. And that's a problem for many children, because most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy ...
... "It's taken for granted in adult society that we cannot all be 'generalists' skilled in every area of learning and mastery. Nevertheless, we apply tremendous pressure to our children to be good at everything. They are expected to shine in math, reading, writing, speaking, spelling, memorization, comprehension, problem solving...and none of us adults can do all this", observes Dr. Levine ...
... "I think a big part of teaching and parenting entails helping kids make it through periods when they feel inadequate. It happens to everyone once in a while... When a child brings home disappointing grades, parents can take solace in the well-documented finding that report cards are notoriously poor at predicting how your child will eventually do in a career ...
... Adult life offers many more opportunities for infinitely more kinds of minds than are available during child life. Parents need to find things to praise in a struggling child and make sure that he doesn't give up on himself and get depressed and distressed while waiting for his day to come."

What is a FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE SCHOOL DISTRICT - 6 habits

"For too long, Michigan school districts have not considered the needs of their two customers:
the taxpayer and the parent. Parents, of course, want their children to be well educated, and taxpayers rightly expect that education be fiscally responsible, not wasting precious tax dollars... "

Message from the Dalai Lama (Tibetan spiritual leader and winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize) to young people ... about hope and the importance of balancing education with a good heart.
AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DALAI LAMA
[excerpt: © 2000 PeaceJam ]
" ... Brothers and sisters, as human beings on this small planet, time is always changing, always moving. In a way, the way things always keep changing is good, because if they did not, all of these negative things would remain. Because things are always changing, there is always hope."
